and half a time
And I will deliver them to be removed into all the
kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a
reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all
places whither I shall drive them.
“You only have I known of all the families of
the earth; therefore I will punish you for all
your iniquities." Amos 3:2
Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will
revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the
whole heart faint. Isaiah 1:5.
It's time we began listening to what God is saying to us as a people. As the genealogical
descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, we have a very special relationship with God. So
special, in fact, that when we get out of hand he is quite prompt and firm in dispensing
discipline and correction.
By the time God brought our forebears out of Egypt, they had degenerated significantly
from the faith and reverence demonstrated by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Of course, there
were faithful and righteous individuals in the congregation, but the repeated episodes of
idolatry and rebellion in the wilderness demonstrated a serious spiritual character flaw
had taken root during the Hamitic Captivity. We find in the book of Joshua that many of
the people had indeed joined in with idolatrous festivities when they were under Egyptian
The New Testament fulfills and interprets the Old, and from the Apostle Paul we learn
that the Mosaic law was a type of schoolmaster - an instructor - to bring Israel to Christ.
Obviously, some type of spiritual block existed so that Israel could not embrace the deeper
things of the Kingdom of God and move forward in being the peculiar treasure God desired.
Centuries later, Christ would say of Abraham that (he) saw his (Christ's) day, and rejoiced
to see it. And Jacob wrestled with the Angel of God and prevailed. But here were the
generational descendants of these two faithful men of God acting more like they were
related to the Egyptians than the patriarchs!
With this kind of attitude, it is not difficult to see why Israel had to be introduced to the
Law first. Remember, Law is given for lawless individuals (an important point to
consider whenever you encounter people and movements that try to steer you
into obeying the Mosaic Law). The Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came
by Jesus Christ (John 1:17.). Again, there was always a remnant who saw the bigger picture
and had great faith in God. God sees saints such as these as special jewels among His
treasures (Malachi 3:17.)
But where most of the others were concerned, there is no doubt that any type of prolonged
captivity takes a huge toll on the psyche, morals, and spiritual perspective of a people. And
that is exactly what has befallen us in the latter days of the Captivity. In the quest for
equality, we have assimilated ourselves with the pagan nation of our bondage and imitated
their ways. In some areas, we have become even worse than they are. We have adopted their
mindset, and deceived ourselves into thinking we are just as worthy as they to partake of the
prepackaged church social club, wicked entertainment sorceries, and secret societies; as long
as it is done with our own special cultural 'flavor'. We foolishly call this progress and point
with pride at how far we have come, because the subservient stereotypes and humiliating
caricatures are things of the past . But where are we going?
Our young men continue to fill the prisons, and our youth are increasingly disillusioned
with what American society has to offer. Even older people are beginning to see the
futility and worthlessness of it all, and how nothing is ever really meant to change. We
cling to the vain hope that some leader will take notice, some economic initiative will be
put into place ... surely, something will happen to provide lift to us as an aggregate.
Yet, the West lurches on, stumbling like a drunk into one childish event and contrived
emergency after another; catering to whoever has the biggest bullhorn and deepest pockets
in the never-ending political and social engineering chaos. We are left to discuss and
dispute among ourselves how to remedy the myriad problems that never go away and
never resolve. Even as the wise and articulate in our midst attempt to speak to these
issues, our people continue to be caught up in foolish pursuits and deadly actions. We
have been chastised in Captivity, but many are like those who take a drug that makes
them impervious to pain. God sees that we are reaching the point of futility in being
stricken, for we will only revolt more and more. We are not responding correctly to the
pain of Divine chastisement because "the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
Heart sickness in this context in the Hebrew speaks to anxiety, calamity, grief, and
disease, while faint speaks to sickness and loathing. We say we are okay and we can make
it in Babylon's system if we can just catch an even break and perhaps some reparations
for the injustices of the past. God says, no - that's not the answer. You are weak,
sick, and dealing with frustration at yourself, your state of being, and the
state of your people:...you are in a bad state.
Christ echoed the same sentiment hundreds of years later to the descendants of the same
people Jeremiah was talking too: Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have
eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that
ye might have life. God remonstrates with the people through Isaiah that they have
heavy ears, blind eyes, and a blocked mind, and that they cannot turn (repent) so He can
heal them. The problem is not the oppressor increasing our misery so much as
our own refusal to deal first with ourselves and with God.
By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they
cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty...But none saith, Where is God my
maker, who giveth songs in the night; Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the
earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? Job 35:9-11
What is it about us that we keep looking everywhere but to our Kinsman-Redeemer??
Perhaps if we understood who we are as the descendants of the patriarchs, and who our
Kinsman-Redeemer is - we would get off the merry-go round of false promises and dashed
hopes and realize there is nothing to love in this world, and pray for the Kingdom of God
to manifest on earth. Like we were told to pray. Why do we insist on repeating the folly
of our forebears according to the word given to Jeremiah in Chapter 2:13? "For my
people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living
waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water."
It takes a lot of work to dig a cistern. It's not an easy
job. God says that when you go any other route than by
trusting Him, you are wasting your energy-not only in
forsaking Him, but in building a cistern that will be
faulty and leak all your water anyway. He then makes it
clear how to obtain the Living Water: Remember Jesus
spoke only the words the Father gave him to say. And
Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well that the
Living Water issued from him.
As I stated earlier, there was always a remnant who had faith in God and trusted and honored
him with their whole heart. Even so today the same opportunity exists. We are a broken
people; wretched and undone. Only as a new creation in Christ Jesus can we be made whole
and a blessing to society and the nations where we reside as we wrap up the closing era of the
Latter Day Captivity. Christ alone is the Deliverer out of Sion that can turn away
ungodliness from Jacob.
You may ask, why are you focusing on us? Everyone is messed up. True...the whole world lies
in wickedness and evil men and seducers are getting worse and worse, deceiving and being
deceived. But the hierarchy of blessing always extends in this order: Judah, then Israel and
the scattered people thereof, then as many as the Lord our God shall call (the Gentiles.) That
means we have to take the lead in sanctification and a witness that is beyond reproach.
Our lives are open books known and read of all men. Pray for the blinders to come off the eyes
of our people so that in this final countdown the world will see Christ in us, the Hope of
Glory. Each vessel that shines the Light of the World reveals the Way to others in darkness.
What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For
your ruin is vast as the sea; who can heal you? Thy prophets have seen
vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine
iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens
and causes of banishment. Lamentions 2:13-14.
Why would God offer healing if we are not sick?
